In the beginning of the fifties, American armed forces erected 21 nearly identical residential buildings with American living standards in Neu-Ulm Vorfeld. After the troops left Vorfeld in 1991, the buildings were used for Neu-Ulm residents. The open spaces between buildings met requirements for former soldiers but do not satisfy current demands.
During the revitalization of Vorfeld, the residential quarter will adapt to today’s standards of use and context. General modernizations of the 351 apartments and a redesign of exterior spaces, whose ample character is an important asset to the area are part of the revitalization. A district office offering social services in connection to a cafe, a creche, a public square, kindergarten, elementary, and high school supplement the already existing infrastructure. The main goal is to strengthen the identity of the area and the relationship of residents to their neighbourhood.
